EDUCATOR Resources

St Thomas-Elgin Children’s Services and Strive are proud to present Child Care and Early Years Professional Resources.

Terms of Use

  1. Resources are only available to Early Years professionals working within St Thomas-Elgin County. They are available on a first come/first serve basis and cannot be reserved in advance.
  2. Borrowers will produce government issued ID and confirm workplace and personal number at the time of lending.
  3. Resources will be returned after 1 month to circulation, fully intact, clean, and dry, ready for future borrowing.
  4. Items will be counted and returned in quantities lent. Any broken/lost items will be replaced by the borrower with a comparable item prior to returning.

This resource contains materials and items that focus on connection and disconnection. It will be of primary interest to a toddler or preschool age group but has items that may be adapted for use with infants as well as older children.

This resource is all about designing, making and hands-on exploration with real tools. This is best suited for a preschool or school age group.

Containing Wonder: A Containment and Displacement Resource

This resource is all about the containment and displacement of objects and materials. It is best suited for an older toddler group but could easily be adapted for use with infants with some slight modifications to the types of materials included.

Design and Tinker: A Makerspace Resource

This resource is all about inventing and experimenting. Most suitable for preschool and/or school-aged children, though younger children may also enjoy sensorial exploration of the materials.

This resource is all about perception and reflection. It is adaptable for use with both infant and toddler age groups. This resource is ideal for promoting self-identification in infants while allowing older children to engage with scientific thinking and language acquisition.

This resource is all about inviting children to play, learn and imagine with one of the most definitive loose parts: blocks. This is best suited for a preschool age group but even toddlers and infants may enjoy sensorial exploration of the wooden forms.

One By One: A Numeracy and Measurement Resource

This resource is about encouraging children to experience and explore with numeracy. It is adaptable for use with older toddler and preschool groups. The materials in this resource are ideal for promoting number sense, representation and recognition, spatial awareness, measurement, estimation and problem solving. Children will have the opportunity to learn how to identify numbers in relation to objects, gain number literacy as well as explore the phonetics of numbers through play. This encourages children’sliteracy skills in relation to numbers and number patterns

This resource is all about exploring patterns through design using loose parts. It is intended for use by a preschool or school age group due to the nature of the small pieces included.

Educator Resource: Round and round and round

Round and Round and Round…A Rotation Resource

This resource provides an introduction and opportunity for children to explore with rotation, described as the gross and fine motor ability to twist, turn, spin, rotate, and turn in a circular driven motion. While the materials are conducive to any age, it is best suited for use with older toddlers or preschool aged children when the dexterity for rotation expands.

This resource is all about supporting a child’s developing self-identity through portrait inquiries with Loose Parts. It is best suited for a preschool or school age group.

Educator Resource: The order of things

The Order of Things: A Seriation Resource

This resource provides an introduction and opportunity for children to explore with seriation, described as the notion of forming a sequence based on a prescribed order. While the materials are conducive to any age, it is best suited for use with preschool aged children when the understanding of seriation begins. The materials within this resource are ideal for promoting the understanding of sequence in regards to being the same and slightly different at the same time.

This resource is focused on providing stimulating exploratory experiences for infants and toddlers while supporting heuristic play. This resource is ideally suited for infants able to sit up independently (6-7 months) to those about 18 months old.

This resource encourages children to learn about and respect the local wildlife within their immediate environments. It is adaptable for use with preschool and older groups.

The materials in this resource are ideal for promoting awareness and respect by cohabitating with local bugs and wildlife. Children will have the opportunity to learn how to identify, track, and learn about the animal habitats within their neighbourhood.
