Posted: January 2, 2025

Music and music activities such as dancing, singing, traditions and celebrations have played a significant role in cultures for many, many centuries. According to Marotz, “Music is often described as an expression of emotions that unites listeners and participants in a unique social bond” (Marotz, 2023, p. 128).

Music and Child Development

Music plays a crucial role in the early years of a child’s development. Music supports all the developmental domains which are social, emotional, physical, cognitive and language.

  • Social – promoting shared experiences such as singing together, playing an instrument, turn-taking, and cooperation.
  • Emotional – allows children to express, understand and regulate their emotions
  • Cognitive – music stimulates many parts of the brain.
  • Physical – develops both fine motor and gross motor skills
  • Language – learn sounds, meanings of words and increases vocabulary.

You can incorporate music and musical activities into your child’s day in a variety of ways. Singing with your child, introducing musical instruments, musical games and listening to music are just some of the ways to engage your child in music.

Importance of Music

Music plays a significant role in the lives of young children. Sharing music and musical experiences with your child or children makes them feel cherished and important. Music supports all areas of development. Including a variety of musical experiences can create a foundation for a lifetime of appreciation of music.
