Not Just Play
Children often migrate towards puddles whenever they come across one. Not only are puddles
lots of fun to jump in they also have an educational component to them.
Jumping in puddles is a gross motor development activity. Children are strengthening their
large muscles as they are jumping, hopping or running through the puddles. They are building
their coordination and balance as they walk through the water and mud.
Playing in puddles is also a sensory experience. Children can dig in the mud or splash in the
water to feel the wetness on their body. The children may also notice the temperature of the
puddle. On a hot summer day the puddle would be warm as opposed to a cool spring morning
the puddle would be colder.
Pouring and scooping puddle water is a great fine motor activity which is helping to build the
smaller muscle groups. Children can learn about cause and effect as well. For example, if they
toss a stone in the puddle the stone would sink but if they toss a leaf in the same puddle it
would float.
Another benefit to jumping in puddles is that it is simply fun! Most children love to get messy and
are drawn to puddles. They can’t help but to explore them. When a group of children are
jumping in puddles there is bound to be lots of smiles and laughter.
Get Ready For Messy
Wearing proper clothing when exploring puddles helps to increase the pleasure of the
experience. Although not necessary, splash pants and rubber boots help to keep the children
dry while playing in the water. If the play is more spontaneous having a change of clothes and
footwear is also a great idea.
Next time you come across a puddle let the children explore. You might end up with some extra
laundry but you will also end up with some happy children too!
